Another important detail has been to include the name of each fish in Catalan, Spanish and English to avoid possible confusion with the names throughout the book, if we wish to know the name in a certain language. The Menorcan names vary depending on the island´s most important fishing ports(Maó, Es Castell, Ciutadella and Fornells). When a name coincides, the name of the town is not listed, only its variant. The names have also been considered with reference to a manuscript found recently and which is dated 1822. It was written by Dr. Josep Sancho and at the present time is the oldest book about the fishes in Menorca. Two publications by Jaime Ferrer Aledo dated 1914 and 1930 have also been taken into account. I have tried to avoid the use of technical names as far as possible, but as it has been inevitable in some cases, a short glossary with the meaning of each one has been included. As a fish may have a different name in Catalan, Spanish, or English depending on the region, the most common name has been chosen. |
