With just over 700 km2 and only 200 km of coastline, Menorca is characterized by a series of plant communities with a high level of endemicity. The flora of Menorca, conditioned by its climate, its substrate, its geological history, and by the mere fact of being an island, still has eighty endemic taxons. Of those, fifteen are Tyrrhenian endemisms, that is, common to the other Balearic Islands, Corsica, and Sardinia. Nine are Balearic endemisms, 37 are Gymnesic, shared principally with Majorca, and 16 are endemisms exclusive to Menorca. Thanks to the great variety of ecosystems that benefit from intelligent and respectful exploitation of the environment, Menorca benefits from a great biodiversity of plant life with over 1,200 catalogued species. |
