Menorca is a small flat island located in a region with poor rainfall. Therefore, the watercourses flowing around it are small and the rainfall on the sea surrounding it is also scarse. Furthermore, the fact that the European mainland is far away from the island means that the fresh waters which are poured into the Western Mediterranean sea by rivers such as the Ebro never reach it. These two facts are responsible for the two most obvious features of Menorca´s coastline: abundance of rocky coasts and of cristal clear waters. Besides, this also affects the kind of species found in Minorca, both animalwise and plantwise. The animal and plant populations of the rocky or sandy seabeds are quite different, due to the fact that their physical features are so different. This DVD will show you many of the fish and other organisms that can be seen around the Minorcan coasts. We have dived down 50 meters below the surface in order to film some organisms at great depths. Many images have been taken during the night, when the shyest fauna would emerge from their hiding places making themselves visible to our cameras who filmed them in order to now show them to you in your homes. Some mammals, such as dolphins and monk seals -the latter having become extinct on the island due to human pressure-, are also part of Menorca´s underwater fauna that you will be able to see. |
